The Frequency of Violence in Workplace against Emergency Care Personnel in Kerman, Iran, and the Factors Affecting the Occurrence

Introduction: The jobs related to emergency medicine system are among jobs with direct contact with illness and injury that may cause violence in workplace. This study aimed to determine the frequency of violence in workplace against emergency care personnel and the factors affecting the occurrence in Kerman University of Medical Sciences, Iran. Method: In this cross-sectional descriptive study, 200 participants were selected randomly using quota sampling method. Using a researcher-made questionnaire, the frequency of violence in workplace an the affecting factors were assessed. The data were analyzed via descriptive statistics. Results: Of 155 people completely filled the questionnaire, 130 (83.8%) have experienced violence in workplace at least once a year. Among the various kinds of violence, the most frequent reported was the verbal violence (105 people, 67.7%), followed by physical violence (35 people, 22.5%), cultural violence (15 people 9.6%). and sexual violence (0%). Discussion and Conclusion: The result of this study showed the necessity of providing various training courses for emergency care personnel about how to deal with patient and patient comrade to decrease the rate of workplace violence, to improve public health level, and to decrease their psychological stresses and occupational exhaustion.
